The trees in Hawai‘i grow tall and wide. Some, like this one, are incredibly sculptural with roots towering above the ground. Each tree has its own personality. You’ll find this tree on the grounds behind Queen Emma’s Summer Palace on Nu`uanu Avenue in Honolulu. Walking the grounds takes you past several tree-climbing opportunities. Some tower high while others, with lower branches running parallel to the ground are less frightful. This painting shows my grand-nephew climbing the roots up to one enormous tree behind the Palace.
