Enchanted by the mystery of its nighttime bloom, I plucked a bud as it began to open. Placing it in a vase, I was surprised to find it stayed open into early afternoon the following day. Left on the cactus, they wither by 9 a.m. That bloom became the first cereus I ever painted.
