The flowers portrayed in this piece are Gardenia. We’re so spoiled in Hawai`i, many yards are fragrant with the sweet blooms of gardenia throughout spring into early summer. I was surprised to learn these small shrubs are in the coffee family. When brought indoors, their woody stems must be peeled to ensure the blooms, often sold in bunches, get enough water.

The challenge of painting white flowers in watercolor is that because we use the white of the paper instead of white paint, one has to be careful to not use too much paint! To make matters more interesting, gardenias yellow as they age. So a flower that was white an hour ago soon has a yellow cast.
