Birds of Paradise, Heliconia, and Bananas are part of the same plant family — just as you and I are part of the family of humans. We share some commonalities, yet bloom and grow in our own spectacular, colorful ways.

Flowers captivated me upon my arrival in Hawai`i and continue to stop me in my tracks. An avid walker, they show me fresh aspects of beauty daily. The patterns of sidewalk cracks also capture my attention.

New life can be seen sprouting through the cracks in sidewalks, cement driveways, and even in the cracks in boulders. Life causes the cracks in boulders. Life will not be stopped. Life prevails.

Stress is a part of life. The trade winds bring relief on a summer’s day and are the reason palm trees have feather-like fronds — their “leaves” are “pre-torn.” We all grow through stress. Stress causes us to become flexible, and there is resilience and strength in flexibility.
