The flowers portrayed here are Hibiscus, one strain of yellow hibiscus is the Hawai‘i state flower. Hibiscus can be a source of beauty, food, tea, fibers, wood, dyes, perfumes, and medicines.

This painting began in one of the online watercolor classes I taught. My intention was to show the class how to paint hibiscus using “negative” paintings techniques. Painting intuitively, I watch paintings evolve, respond to what emerges, and paint around shapes to highlight them.

Bliss — because the pinks and oranges in this painting fill me with joy and bliss. Bliss because life is filled with bliss when we stay open (no strings attached) to life as unfolds and emerges.
