Gentle Soul of the Sea

Gentle Soul of the Sea

from 40.00

Green Sea Turtles (known as honu in Hawai`i) have been protected in the US since 1978. Because of this protection, they have no fear of people, and are often seen in our waters and basking on our beaches. This isn’t true at all South Pacific islands. Prior to the 1970s, honu were often seen as a delicious source of food, and their shells were used for all sorts of things, from hair pins to calabash bowls.
Today honu are prevalent in our waters. This has caused researchers to wonder if shark attacks occur because the silhouette of a surfer or boogie boarder seen from deep water, looks very much like that of a turtle.

Honu have nerve endings in their carapace (shell), so please be gentle near these Gentle Souls of the Sea.
