Changing Directions

This painting is about the wind as it plays with the waves as they crash upon the shore. It's also about understanding that change is inevitable; and learning to welcome it, no matter how sudden or unexpected it might be. Change happens in many levels; sometimes it's subtle, sometimes quite blatant. Learning to go along with change, no matter its course, is learning to live life gracefully.

These particular leaves had been removed from the tree before they had time to turn colors. Bundled into a pile and left at the side of the road where they will be picked up, they still look beautiful. They remind me that Life is a Tangle of mystery, magic, and beauty.

Coconut Dawn

At one time coconut palms were to be banned from Waikiki; it was felt they posed too great a danger to unsuspecting guests. Their heavy coconuts, while lovely to see and delicious to eat, are deadly missiles if they fall on anyone’s head. Happily, one canny developer spent a fortune having several hundred coconut palms planted overnight right before the ban was to take effect. Today regular crews keep the trees trimmed, cutting off the coconuts while they’re still seeds and saving all of our “noggins”. I’ve seen the damage they can do to a car windshield, that’s close enough for me.

The Sum of the Parts

The plant portrayed in this piece is the White Bird of Paradise also known as the Travellers Palm. Though not technically a palm at all, it’s graceful leaves branch out in a giant fanned shape.

I have tried to paint this beautiful plant before, but because of its stature, when I tried to paint it realistically, I portrayed the top alone, forgetting the trunk. Suddenly it hit me — I could paint all of the parts of the plant that I like the most — the trunk, the flower, and the leaves, in a new way. I would show you my favorite parts of the plant, each to their best advantage.

The Sum of the Parts celebrates the leaves along the side, the flowers in the middle, and the beauty of the trunk on top.

Wind Blown

The plant portrayed in this piece is the Bottle Palm. These gracious Bottle Palms are short in stature (about ten feet tall), a tad rotund, and can be found growing in private yards as well as at hotels all over the islands.

This particular palm tree grows in outside a friend’s home in Kapolei. As we were leaving an evening of friendship and dominoes, I noticed this wild and crazy palm frond waving in the wind. I took several photos and rearranged the fronds to suit my needs for the painting.

Wind Blown is the way you feel when sailing on the ocean. Wind Blown: like the way you feel after a good day surfing. Wind Blown: the feeling you have when the sun is kissing your cheeks and the waves are washing over you. Wind Blown: that wild and crazy feeling that life is beautiful and you’re glad to be alive! May that feeling be yours for a long, long time to come.

Chapters

The leaves portrayed in this piece are from the palmetto palms and the hala trees growing here in the islands. Before the leaves and fronds fall from the trees, they turn a beautiful golden brown. Our harsh sun further bleaches them to tints of
silver, gray, green, and sometimes blue. I often photograph piles of leaves along the side streets while I’m out walking. My inspiration comes in the many ways these leaves wither, yet manage retain their innate beauty in the face of death.

This painting speaks of the importance of our past, present, and our future when our life is woven together. Each part of our life informs the other. This means that our future hopes and dreams help to shape our present, just as our past and present experiences do. Each aspect of life is important.
