Mango Mania

Mangoes grow in excess here in the islands. Trees become laden with fruit that drop to the ground, often eaten by birds before people can pick them up. The trees are huge and are rarely trimmed back—one reason the birds are the eager recipients of these fruits. Mangoes are some of the most passionately messy fruits on earth; eating them in a bathtub is recommended. Once you’ve discovered their luscious flavor, you’ll forgive them their hesitancy to be devoured. Then you’ll want to enjoy this yummy recipe, one of my new favorites:

Hibiscus: Infused with Light

While I was painting this piece, the phrase “Infused with Light” came to mind. I wondered if perhaps the title shouldn’t be “Infused with Life”; I decided they are really one and the same. Please enjoy the light and life these painted hibiscus bring into your life.

Orchid: When in Doubt, Make a Dramatic Entrance

I’m so lucky to be surrounded by orchids while painting in Hawai‘i. Such lovely, sweet, gentle flowers, each time I paint them I am reminded of angels flitting about beside me.
This “angel” is making a particularly dramatic entrance; reminding us to do the same. Sometimes it is hard to remember our true, amazing nature. When we make a dramatic entrance, or play dress-up for an event, we are remembering who we really are. Try it for yourself. See how wonderful and alive you feel when you really do “show up”.

Orchid: A Gentle Observer

The flower portrayed in this print is the Cattleya orchid. According to who you talk to, orchids are either quite easy to grow…as long as you remember to ignore them and be patient; or they are difficult to grow. Generally, they don’t like direct sunlight and they don’t like to get their “feet” (roots) wet. When cared for properly, they’ll bloom once a year … or when they’re ready.

I think of my orchid paintings as “Orchid Angels” and each one has a different gift to share. This angel offers a a gentle, quiet presence, a witness if you will, for anyone lucky enough to feel her patient, loving energy.

Sunrise Bird

The flower portrayed in this painting is the Bird of Paradise. Originally from South Africa, this flower is seen in so many Hawaiian floral arrangements that it’s often thought to be native to the islands. It certainly flourishes here. Its striking “plumage” blends in beautifully with the rest of the flora.

These “birds” appear to be ready to take their morning flight—right from their nest of blue-green leaves. Can you see their colors shimmer in the morning light? I hope this print brightens your morning and gives you the feeling of “lift off” to start your day.

Heaven Sent

When I titled this painting, I was tempted to call it "Heaven Scent" but I thought most orchids don't have much scent. Then, yesterday I went to the orchid nursery in Palolo Valley. OMG! The Cattleyas there smelled SO good, I might have to reconsider this title!

Bright Sunshiney Day

The flowers portrayed here are Sunflowers. Throughout the ages, the sunflower has been appreciated for its ability to point toward the sun and emulate the sun’s warmth. Sunflowers are fun to grow to the tallest of heights; and are often seen as the mascot of the backyard garden. Because of this, sunflowers are the garden “extroverts”. Sunflowers are also seen as a symbol of friendship, and were made famous by the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh.

These sunflowers were patterned after those in my friend Mary’s garden. Mary’s sunflowers reach more than twelve feet into the air; her thumb must be green! These sunflowers are meant to brighten your day, bringing the carefree feeling of summer directly to you.

Three Archangels

The flower portrayed here is one of the Cattleya orchid varieties. Orchids dot the landscape of Hawai‘i. They can be found on the grounds of hotels, the backyards of many homes, and on the plates of most restaurants. Orchids are quite easy to grow…as long as you remember to ignore them and be patient. Generally, they like indirect sun and very little water. When cared for properly, they’ll bloom once a year…or when they’re ready.

I’m so lucky to be surrounded by orchids while painting in Hawai‘i. Such lovely, sweet, gentle flowers, each time I paint them I am reminded of angels. These three “angels” arrived quite subtly. Each one is watching from a different perspective, guarding over us with such softness I am reminded of an anonymous quote I once read: “Soft has never before been so strong.”

May your soft inner strength guide you this day, and your angels hover nearby, giving you strength along the way.?

Growing Sunshine Pineapple

The pineapple is a type of Bromeliad. The term bromeliad is used to classify a wide variety of succulent plants found in all areas of the world. From Spanish Moss (known here as Pele’s Hair) to the Pineapple, bromeliads come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Once grown in far greater numbers on the islands, the pineapple is a source of both food and beauty.

I’ve enjoyed eating fresh pineapples all my life. It wasn’t until I stopped to take some close-up photos of the pineapples in the fields on the North Shore that I realized each one is covered with tiny stars. My imagination soared with delight and I knew then that I wanted to capture the essence of the starry magic in this wonderful fruit. This painting also celebrates the idea of the Pineapple expressed as sunshine on Earth.

Celebration Hibiscus

This painting started life as a demonstration in one of my Hide-N-Seek Watercolor Workshops (see classes). Right from the start, the colors reminded me of confetti and brought to mind celebrations. These flowers are celebrating life. Look to it when you feel like celebrating anything, it will surely enhance your mood.

Gone Bananas

The plants shown here is the Apple Banana. These small, sweet bananas are found in many back yards on the islands, in fact these particular bananas were growing in my friend Ron’s back yard.

I’ve long been a big fan of bananas, but it wasn’t until moving to Hawai‘i that I saw them grow. The flowers open up one petal at a time, pushed open by the sweet fruit underneath, and falling off as the fruit grows. Each plant (it’s not really a tree although it is quite tall) produces one big bunch of bananas before dying off and issuing a new stalk.

Dreams of Dancing

These anthurium seem to be swirling and twirling to music only they can hear. They remind us to make our own special music, our very own theme song, to which we can move through life. Hibiscus `Ohana

Ohana means family, and these hibiscus are certainly that. Two of them are bunched together; another is off on its own. There are small buds (keiki, or children) along the edges. All are growing with enthusiasm and joy.

I painted this piece at a time when my own personal family was growing (I was getting married) so it is infused with the love of family. I hope you can feel that love and share it with your own family.

Inner Fire Ginger

The flowers portrayed on this print are Red Ginger. While there are over 700 varieties of ginger, the two portrayed in this piece are the most widely recognized. The tall Torch Ginger on the right is so named because the dried flower head is the shape of an extinguished torch, bringing to mind life in the “old Hawai`i” we dream about.

The ginger in this piece is alive, lit from within by an inner fire. It gladly lends its light to all in need of a spark, or just a little glow, even on those darker days we all experience from time to time.

Even before I moved to the islands, the Bird of Paradise had captured my heart and my imagination. I bought them whenever I saw them in the grocery store floral department. They seem so joyfully exuberant, and feel as though they are ready to take flight at any moment.

Heliconia: Ala i ka lani

The flowers portrayed in here are Heliconia. Heliconia come in many shapes, sizes, and colors; some grow upwards, while others hang down. The true flowers are small and conical, growing inside the dramatic showy bracts.

Some heliconia grow with the bracts pointing up, others grow hanging down. No matter, their beauty is brilliant both ways. Sometimes our own growth takes place in fits and starts. What might look like a “wrong turn” turns out to be our biggest steop forward.

Ala i ka Lani is Hawaiian for Pathway to Heaven. This heliconia painting was titled by consensus; I asked my readers to give it a title. Several mentioned heaven, reaching upwards, toward the sun, or growing to heaven. A few mentioned a spiraling energy, one similar to the double helix of our DNA. Perhaps it was best summed up as always seeking to improve, expand, and broaden our creativity.

Misty Morning Plumeria

At any time of day, on any side of the island, when we look to the mountains, we often see misty clouds clinging to the mountaintops. It’s comforting to see these clouds blanketing our land with moisture.

These plumeria are peeking out from beneath their misty morning leafy home. Practically bursting off the page, they eager to share their beauty with you. Imagine the misty morning clouds hanging over the Ko`olaus. Perhaps you’re feeling a bit gloomy. Wouldn’t you love to come upon these flowers on such a day? Their fragrance would lift your spirits, reminding you of your time on the islands, bringing a smile back to your lips.

Plumeria Pinwheels

The flowers portrayed in this print are Plumeria. Native to tropical America, plumeria are most often associated with Hawai‘i because of their presence in the leis given to visitors. The waxy, fragrant flowers are borne in clusters on drought-resistant trees. In many parts of the world, the plumeria is known as frangipani.

These plumeria are playful and filled with cheer as they spin their tales of gentle breezes wafting through the branches. There are several varieties of plumeria on the islands, most blooming all year long. Even though many of the trees shed their leaves each winter, the flowers continue to come forth.

This particular painting reminds us that our cheerful self is always someplace deep within, even on our most “wintry” of days. Always remember to nurture your inner cheerful self.
