Regenerating Paradise

The flower portrayed in this painting is the White Bird of Paradise. It grows on a tall plant similar to the Traveler’s Palm Tree.
As a passerby watched me paint, she exclaimed she was watching me regenerate paradise. Truly it’s the flora, the fauna, and the gentle breezes doing that for us every day. We can all do it for ourselves too. Simply remember that we carry it around within us where ever we go.

Ulu: Tree of Life

The Ulu, or Breadfruit Tree, is also known as the Tree of Life to island communities. To say this tree grows quickly is to understate it’s amazing regeneration capabilities. I’ve seen one trimmed down to the trunk at the end of one season, producing fruits by the end of the next. The beauty of the Ulu leaves is legendary. They’re widely depicted on Hawaiian quilts.

The Ulu are prized for both the beauty and shade provided by the leaves, as well as for the starchy breadfruit they produce. The fruits themselves don’t have much flavor, but rely on the seasonings with which they’re cooked.

Growing in All Directions

The flowers portrayed in this print are Heliconia. Heliconia come in many shapes, sizes, and colors; some grow upwards, while others hang down. The true flowers are small and conical, growing inside the dramatic showy bracts. Heliconia are long-lasting in tropical floral arrangements, a true mainstay of the Hawaiian cut-flower industry.

Some heliconia grow with the brachts pointing up, others grow hanging down. No matter, their beauty is brilliant both ways. Sometimes our own growth takes place in fits and starts. What might look like a “wrong turn” turns out to be our biggest steop forward.

No matter what your inner growth looks like, be proud that you are taking steps. Whether they seem forward or back, know that you can turn them into steps in the “right direction.”

Heliconia often look unreal, their beauty is so other worldly. This heliconia is reaching up toward the heavens. Its very existence is a prayer. Although their thick banana-like foliage often hides these flowers, nothing stops them from reaching for the light of day. Nothing need stop you in your daily quest for light either.

Tenacity and persistence, count for more than we know! May this proud, strong heliconia serve to remind you to stand tall in your strengths as you reach for your inner light.
